Our Communities

Sustainable September 2017:
An on-site lunch for elderly people. Team UK.

A group of LGM UK, Cramlington employees across different departments have been working with a local sheltered housing association and recently arranged for a small group of elderly people to attend an on-site lunch.

Plant manager Mark Ward sponsored the event, and welcomed the group on the day: “This was a great chance to engage with our local community and help people who are often isolated. They had the opportunity to socialize with each other and talk with plant employees.”

Taxis were arranged to collect the participants, the oldest of whom was 87. The event was a genuine team effort: Rachel Sleeth (process engineer), reached out to find the participants. Mick Platten (ELS project leader), and Colin Durward (maintenance technician), arranged the visit and liaised with the plant canteen, and Kerry Reed (quality specialist), helped with serving the lunches.

Future plans are already underway. The plant team wants to join forces with a nursery next time, and is intending to arrange an event at Christmas complete with carol singing.

Lynsey Greenall, HR manager Cramlington said “Initiatives like this are really important to us in Cramlington. We are proud of our past and we are proud to be part of the local community. Such a simple gesture, a lunch onsite, gave us the chance to recognize this and meant so much to these elderly ladies”.

Sustainable September 2017:
Team Australia brings families to join in National Tree Day

Colleagues and their families planted over 100 tree saplings in Karkarook, Heatherton to support revegetation

On Sunday 30 July, the Melbourne team celebrated National Tree Day! Luckily for us, the severe weather warnings from the day before cleared, and we were fortunate to have beautiful blue skies in the middle of winter.

National Tree Day is run by Planet Ark in conjunction with Parks Victoria and Toyota and is Australia’s largest annual community tree planting and nature care event. The event started in 1996, and since then more than 3.8 million people have planted over 23 million trees—and it’s still growing! Parks Victoria supply the trees and planting equipment (and a BBQ lunch!), all they need is volunteers to come along and help.

We chose a site close to the office, Karkarook Park, in Heatherton, joining hundreds of other adults, kids and community groups to plant trees—with the Avery group alone planting over 100! At this site specifically, we built on the revegetation work undertaken in previous years and helped to increase the habitat values of the site for native animals.

Thank you to everyone who took time out of their weekend to participate in this valuable project—Santosh Khengar, Andrew Watt (and kids Seb, Daniel, Amelia & Nick), Janine Orr (plus partner Kane and kids Chloe & Parker), Urvish Parikh (and wife Shreya), and Jade Ohlmus.

Supporting our communities in Guadalajara—Team Mexico

On May 11th, our colleagues from Guadalajara had their first Social Responsibility Event.

They visited a house that gives support to kids in susceptible situations. The employees gave a quick talk about sustainability and then they realized a dynamic to reinforce the concepts.

This activities help to our communities and allows the integration of different areas of the company.

We are very thankful with the people that participate in these activities and we invite the rest of the organization to join and contribute with Avery Dennison to have a better world.

"It was a great activity talking in a personal and professional level." Daniel Garzon, Site Leader

"It was an amazing experience; it’s a great satisfaction to give some happiness to others." Noeli Valle, EHS

"It was the first time that I participate  so it was a different experience that makes you more sensitive to different situations." David Aviña, Sales Representative

Getting Hands Dirty for Day of Caring 2017—
Team North America

On Wednesday, June 28 a total of 253+ volunteers from Avery Dennison’s Northeast Ohio locations, in North America,  participated in the United Way of Lake County’s 25th annual Day of Caring. Avery Dennison had the most volunteers of any company participating in the event, and participated across a variety of activities:

We kicked things off on June 21 with 81 of our Leadership Development Program (LDP) associates removing mulch and replacing it with pea gravel at the Outdoor YMCA playground.

115+ employees flexed their muscles on June 28 and improved the hiking trails at the Outdoor YMCA. Teams dug ditches, moved gravel and added drainage pipes and timbers to the trails.

40 volunteers spent their day at the Greater Cleveland Foodbank making meals and sorting food

And 17 employees headed to the Mentor Senior Center to weed, mulch and plant flowers.

Day of Caring allows volunteers from local businesses and groups to see first-hand the work local nonprofits do on a daily basis. Most importantly, the day provides a way to give back to the community in a tangible, highly appreciated way.
